Melinda and the caged bird in the poem "The Caged Bird" are similar in many ways. The caged bird is described as quiet and trapped. Melinda seems to feel trapped beneath her secret and she almost never talks because of it. She wants so badly to be free from her secret and tell her story without being criticized. Similarly, the caged bird wants to be free and sing its song like the free bird can.
