Speak- My Reflection
I enjoyed reading the book "Speak." I thought it was interesting how I could see my school and thought of my peers when the author, or Melinda's character, described students and events in her life. I also liked how the main character related to me in more than a few ways. The book had bold way of describing what high school life is really like. It also described alienation well, and got me thinking of how other students may feel within my school.

Melinda- The Caged Bird.
Melinda and the caged bird in the poem "The Caged Bird" are similar in many ways. The caged bird is described as quiet and trapped. Melinda seems to feel trapped beneath her secret and she almost never talks because of it. She wants so badly to be free from her secret and tell her story without being criticized. Similarly, the caged bird wants to be free and sing its song like the free bird can.

The Effects of Alienation
Many teen/high school students have the same thoughts about suicide and not fitting in that Melinda had. The feeling of alienation can be overwhelming. These thoughts can be on that person's mind at all times. When someone feels like an outcast they feel like they don't belong in everyday situations that most people would feel fine in. These thoughts and feelings can lead to just wanting to end it all.

Ways I Express Myself
There are many ways that I express myself. For instance, right now I am expressing myself through my clothes and the music I listen to. I am wearing a jacket that I got from camp that says “UDA Summer Dance Camp.” This shows that I am a dancer. I am also listening to Christian music and I have my Bible with me most of the time, showing my Christianity.
